GVN Experts Convene to Discuss H5N1 Flu — 3rd ad hoc panel

On July 30th, the Global Virus Network hosted a 3rd ad hoc panel of experts to discuss the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. This panel brought together experts to discuss and analyze potential implications for human health and global health security, strategizing responses to this viral threat.

The 1st ad hoc panel occurred on May 13th.

The 2nd ad hoc panel occurred on June 27th.

Thanks to the panelists, who have given their explicit permission, the video recording is available below.

Panel Focal Points

  • Biosecurity Measures for H5N1 Prevention: What specific biosecurity practices should livestock owners adopt to mitigate H5N1 risks in cattle, and how can these practices be effectively shared across the agricultural community?
  • H5N1 Detection: How can local communities and authorities collaborate to improve early detection of H5N1 in cattle?
  • Potential Benefits of Vaccination for US Cattle: Is there evidence supporting the vaccination of US cattle or cattle workers against H5N1, and what are the current opinions on its effectiveness?
  • Supporting R&D for Response Logistics: How can individuals contribute to research and development efforts aimed at improving the logistics of responding to H5N1 outbreaks?

Panel Members

About the Global Virus Network (GVN)

The GVN is essential and critical in the preparedness, defense, and first research response to emerging, existing, and unidentified viruses that pose a clear and present threat to public health. Working in close coordination with established national and international institutions, the GVN is a coalition comprised of eminent human and animal virologists from 80+ Centers of Excellence and Affiliates in 40+ countries, working collaboratively to train the next generation, advance knowledge about how to identify and diagnose pandemic viruses, mitigate and control how such viruses spread and make us sick, as well as develop drugs, vaccines, and treatments to combat them. No single institution in the world has expertise in all viral areas other than the GVN, which brings together the finest medical virologists to leverage their individual expertise and coalesce global teams of specialists on the scientific challenges, issues, and problems posed by pandemic viruses. The GVN is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. For more information, please visit www.gvn.org.
