Dr. Abelardo Araujo is an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Institute of Neurology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a Senior Researcher at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Fiocruz, Brazilian Ministry of Health, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His main research interests are about the neurological complications of infectious diseases, focusing on retroviruses and arboviruses. In addition, he is interested in human prion diseases. Previously, he was the head of Fiocruz’s Laboratory for Clinical Research in Neuroinfections.

Dr. Araujo graduated in Medicine (MD) (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 1983), did his Residency in Clinical Neurology (The Institute of Neurology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 1986), and further specialization in Neurology (Diploma in Clinical Neurology, The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and the Institute of Neurology, UCL, London, UK, 1988). He obtained a master's Degree (MSc) in Neurosciences (Fluminense Federal University, 1991) and a doctorate (PhD) in Virology (Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, FIOCRUZ, 1995). His post-doctorate in retrovirology was under Professor William W. Hall at the University College Dublin, Ireland, in 2001. Dr. Araujo has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and has written 40 book chapters.
