GVN Drs. Yang Liu & Pan Zheng Academy Program

GVN Drs. Yang Liu & Pan Zheng Academy Program

There is a shortage of virologists in basic, clinical and translational researches, in particular in low- and middle-income countries. Training and educating the next generation of virologists is a core pillar of the GVN mission. GVN senior virologists are committed to sharing their invaluable expertise with junior virologists through mentorship and intensive training at the GVN to better prepare the next generation for future global viral threats. We are pleased to announce that we are officially launching the GVN Drs. Yang Liu & Pan Zheng Academy to facilitate mentorship and training of early career virologists through formal GVN programs.

The GVN Academy currently comprises five programs:

About GPFTP

The GVN has an important mission in training future virologists to meet the critical need for highly skilled, broadly educated virologists worldwide. The GVN Postdoctoral Fellowship Training Program (GPFTP) meets one of GVN’s core goals: to nurture junior scientists in pursuing their careers in virology. GPFTP will also ensure emerging leaders in medical virology receive topflight training and have opportunities to engage with either industrial or academia partners globally.

A one-week intensive course on basic, translational, and clinical aspects of viruses of importance to human health. Lecturers will be leading medical virologists drawn from GVN Centers. All didactic courses will be on state-of-the-art aspects of research on specific viruses. Significant time for discussion and interaction with renowned medical virology leaders are hallmarks of the course, as are opportunities to meet with policymakers and program officials from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Since 2014 , this in-person one-week short course has trained more than 90 scientists globally. We will continue to coordinate this important, successful training program as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

By partnering with the University of South Florida, we are creating the online version of the in-person GVN Short Course: Emerging Leaders in Virology.  The online course will aim to benefit students, especially in low- and middle-income countries, who are interested in virology, immunology, epidemiology, public health, and biomedical research by allowing all participants the flexibility of anytime, anywhere online learning.

We are dedicated to bringing you the GVN Alumni Networking Series. It provides an environment to our short course graduates for continuous growth and learning. This group has more than 90 members, including trained virologists and scientists, who are committed to pursuing excellence in their careers through constant learning and knowledge sharing. We offer a variety of programs and initiatives for alumni to connect and learn from each other and from other senior scientists and leaders within the network. It will be a high-impact, online series designed to provide insights, information, and connections to GVN alumni to launch, grow, and expand their career opportunities.
