Who We Are > Academic

Academic Centers of Excellence and Affiliates

Academic Centers of Excellence and Affiliates conduct research in medical virology around the world. Our work is dedicated to understanding, preventing, and eradicating viral disease threats to humanity. We also affirm the need for new programs to coordinate, support and promote research that bridges the gap between virus surveillance and public health implementation.

Those not meeting the requirements to join the GVN as a Center of Excellence may join as an Affiliate or, in exceptional instances, as an individual member.

GVN Regional Headquarters go a step beyond Academic Centers of Excellence, collaborating with GVN international headquarters to provide organizational support and leadership in strengthening basic and translational research in virology and preparedness/response to viral pandemic threats.

USF Health, at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, FL hosts GVN's International Headquarters, previously serving as GVN’s Southeast United States Regional Headquarters. USF Health was the first regional headquarters named by GVN to provide organizational and leadership support to GVN’s International Headquarters. In that capacity, USF Health helped strengthen GVN’s initial research response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, and its collaborative efforts to plan for, and defend against, future epidemics and pandemics. Now hosting GVN's International Headquarters will enable USF Health scientists to partner with GVN experts worldwide to share ideas and research, to translate research into practical applications, to improve diagnostics and therapies and to develop vaccines. USF Health is an integral part of USF, a high-impact global research university dedicated to student success. Through hundreds of millions of dollars in research activity each year and as one of the top universities in the world for securing new patents, USF is a leader in solving global problems and improving lives.
