Dr. Gotuzzo is Emeritus Professor, Former Director of the Instituto de Medicina Tropical “Alexander von Humboldt” of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia as well as Former Director of the Gorgas International Course of Clinical Tropical Medicine. Among others, he is also Past-President of International Society for Infectious Disease (ISID), Past-President of the Asociación Panamericana de Infectología (API), President of 19th International Congress on Human Retrovirology HTLV & Related Viruses, Lima Peru South America Representative, International RetroVirology Association (IRVA) Honorary Member of the Medicine National Academy of Mexico, Member of the Medicine National Academy of Peru, and Member of the Institute of Medicine’s Forum on Microbial Threats – Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, USA (2001-2015)
A researcher who works on a wide range of infectious diseases, Dr. Gotuzzo's main areas of study are HTLV-1, Tuberculosis, HIV, acute respiratory infections, Brucellosis, and vector-borne infections. His experience is not only in epidemiology research and training other health professionals but also in managing large projects. From his clinical experience, he has written chapters on tropical diseases and traveled around the world as visiting professor. He has published 546 articles and 48 chapters, 6 manuals and 2 books.
