6th Annual Short Course in Basic and Translational Virology of the GVN

A Course For Emerging Leaders in Virology

What

A one-week intensive course on basic, translational, and clinical aspects of viruses of importance to human health. Lecturers will be leading medical virologists drawn from GVN Centers. All didactic courses will be on state-of-the-art aspects of research on specific viruses. Significant time for discussion and interaction with renowned medical virology leaders are hallmarks of the course, as are opportunities to meet with policymakers and program officials from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Why

There is a critical need for highly-skilled, broadly-educated medical virologists worldwide. This course meets one of GVN’s core goals: to ensure emerging investigators working in medical virology receive the best training and have opportunities to interact with other global partners. This course supplements skills already obtained and provides new knowledge and avenues for broadening expertise and collaborations.

Who

Approximately 15-20 participants will be selected to participate in this course. This course will benefit early-career scientists and physicians wishing to broaden their skills in medical virology. Candidates should be PhD, or MD students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, Research Associates or Assistant Professors. Key criteria for selection include the likelihood of future work in medical virology or contributions in the field of virology, as well as previous professional and academic accomplishments. A panel of GVN scientists will review all applications.

When

Arrive in Baltimore on Sunday, July 28 for an opening reception that evening. The Course concludes Friday night. Hotel checkout is Saturday morning, August 3, 2019.

Where

Lodging will be provided at the Hampton Inn within walking distance to lecture sites. Shuttles will be available for off-site visits. Several sites in Baltimore will be used for lectures and discussions, including the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Speakers

Leading medical virologists from across the GVN will lecture and participate in this course. They include Drs. Robert C. Gallo (IHV), Diane Griffin (Hopkins), Konstantin Chumakov (FDA), Yutaka Tagaya (IHV),  Kottilil Shyamasundaran (IHV),  and others.

• Lodging for six nights (check in July 28, check out August 3)

• Most meals (breakfast, 5 lunches and 2 dinners)

Participants will arrange their travel to and from Baltimore and the hotel.

Fellowships

3 tuitions will be waived to participants from LMIC. These will be selected by a committee based on qualifications.

Timeline

January 28, 2019: Applications will be accepted with no prioritization by date of receipt. Enrollment is limited.
April 26, 2019: Final deadline for applications.
May 3, 2019: Admission will be awarded on a competitive basis.
July 8, 2019: Tuition is due.
July 28, 2019: 6th Annual GVN Course begins.
