The Course comprises a one-week intensive schedule on basic, translational, and clinical aspects of viruses of importance to human health led by leading medical virologists from GVN Centers of Excellence. All didactic courses focus on state-of-the-art aspects of research regarding specific viruses. Participants will enjoy hallmarks of the course including significant time for discussion and interaction with renowned medical virology leaders as well as opportunities to meet with program officials from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The objectives of the Course align with GVN’s stated mission to reverse the decline of trained basic research medical virologists entering the field by training the next generation. This is achieved by broadening the skill and knowledge of junior and mid-level scientists working in medical virology; enhancing the retention of emerging leaders in medical virology; and, expanding a group of emerging medical virologists with a view toward creating and nurturing a community of virology scholars for the future.
Approximately 15-20 participants will be selected to participate by a panel of GVN scientists who will review the applications. This course will benefit early-career scientists and physicians wishing to broaden their skills in medical virology. Candidates should be PhD or MD students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, Research Associates or Assistant Professors. Key criteria for selection include the likelihood of future work in medical virology or contributions in the field of virology, as well as previous professional and academic accomplishments.
