The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is the national public health institute for South Africa. It provides reference microbiology, virology, epidemiology, surveillance and public health research to support the government’s response to communicable disease threats. The public health orientation of the Institute has been further promoted by transferring much of the routine patient-orientated clinical diagnostic work formerly carried out by the NIV to on-site laboratories and teaching hospitals in the region. The aims of the research carried out by NICD are to address questions relating to the detection of micro-organisms and the detection of factors governing transmissibility and virulence, ecology, epidemic behavior, distribution and factors affecting distribution, interventions and monitoring of the effectiveness as well as biological resistance to interventions.
